Step Up steps out at Hoàn Kiếm Lake

On Saturday, students participating in REACH’s Step Up program for visually impaired persons, showed off their dancing skills at Hoàn Kiếm Lake.

Dancers twirled and whirled around the forecourt at Nhà Bát giác Hồ Gươm all morning showcasing not only their moves but the confidence they’ve developed over several weeks of courses at REACH.

While the task in many ways seemed difficult, and despite the heat, the dancers took to the makeshift dance floor with ease and everyone enjoyed themselves thoroughly.

The program, run by REACH’s, Hiep Hoang Thi, has been running since 2017. Students have learned telesales skills, information technology, martial arts, and, of course, dancing.

Ms. Hiep believes the program has shown some encouraging outcomes.

“Most students became more confident and open-minded in communication and life [in general].”

Furthermore, the youth that took part in the program, in particular, showed some very promising results.

“Young learners were getting more mature in their way of thinking.”

The dance recital project got students moving about and out in public.

The Step Up program aims to remove the barriers to employment that visually impaired people face. It's part of REACH's efforts to provide skills training to persons with disabilities to provide better integration with their communities.
